Research Interests: Dr. Jim Burdine serves as Director and Co-Principal Investigator of the Center for Community Health Development, a CDC-designated Prevention Research Center. Dr. Burdine is also a Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Health at the School of Rural Public Health., Texas A&M Health Science Center in College Station. He holds a doctorate in Public Health (Dr.P.H.) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1979), a Master’s in Public Health from California State University, Northridge (1972), and a Bachelor of Science in Health Science from San Fernando Valley State College (1970). Dr. Burdine is an internationally recognized expert in population health status assessment and community health development. His experience includes the development of a number of national “model” programs for community-based health improvement implemented while he served in senior management positions over a fifteen year period with large hospital systems in Texas and Pennsylvania. Subsequently Dr. Burdine spent ten years as president and senior scientist of a nationally recognized health care consulting firm working with a wide variety of client organizations including federal and state agencies, health care organizations and philanthropic groups. Since coming to Texas A&M in 2001, Dr. Burdine has co-authored more than 100 papers presented at national professional meetings; and has been awarded $15 million in grants and contracts for community health improvement related research, demonstration, and evaluation projects.
