Genomics & Bioinformatics Facility Core
Dr. Robert Chapkin, Director

Our state-of-the-art functional Genomics and Bioinformatics Facility:

Coordinates gene expression experiments utilizing microarray technology, provides RNA quality assessment, Real Time PCR training, and compiles and archives generated data.  In addition the core facilitates interaction between members of the Research Cores by developing new “Systems Biology”-related technologies, e.g., microRNA detection, actively translated (polysomal) mRNA isolation, to generate a panoramic overview of gene expression in target tissues.  These activities fall under the core initiative in “Systems Biology” to model, understand, and ultimately engineer at the molecular level the dynamic relationships among biological molecules that define living organisms.  This takes advantage of our cross-disciplinary activities in Genomics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Engineering.

With respect to bioinformatic resources supported by the facility:  The core provides both basic and advanced analysis of expression data.  We have a successful operating system for basic analysis of expression data, including feature selection, clustering and pathway constructions.  Currently, we have 6 Center members (N. Wang, Dougherty, Ivanov, Mallick, Carroll, and S. Wang) who have expertise in a wide variety of methods for the analysis of genomic data, and the Core will function in a distributed manner to provide these technologies as they are needed.  We also provide a central facility for the evaluation, acquisition of and training in specialized bioinformatics software for analysis of expression data.  Currently, the major need is for the analysis of microarray expression data, and to this end we have a server dedicated to the system SigNet, from Agilent Technologies, with GeneSpring as a front-end user interface.
